1.  Why should you have your jewellery appraised?
  • For insurance purposes
  • If you are buying or selling  a piece, especially through the internet
  • For the liquidation of assets
  • When there is a Tax investigation of an estate
  • Before the distribution of an estate

Who should be appraising your jewellery and gemstones?
  • An appraiser qualified in jewellery appraisal regulations
  • A professional appraiser with an accredited gemmological qualification
  • A person who understands the jewellery market through years' of experience
  • An appraiser who undergoes continued education following the changes in the gem industry
  • An independent appraiser who can act as an impartial third party, and is not involved in buying or selling the piece
    being appraise

What do all the qualifications mean?
There are numerous gemmological designations, some more noted than others.  A few of the important ones are:

4.  How often should you appraise your jewellery and gemstones?
  • It is recommended that you update your appraisal every two or three years
  • Appraisals of jewelry with large gemstones should be updated more often than the appraisals of all gold jewellery
  • Jewellery appraisals should be updated when there is an economic crisis
  • Jewellery should be appraised when there is a large change in the price of precious metals, like gold and platinum
  • When there is a change of ownership of items of jewellery, they should be appraised

What is the difference between a grading report and a jewellery appraisal?
  • A gem grading report, also called an identification report, describes the gemmological information of the gemstone
  • A grading report does not list the value of the gem or item of jewellery
  • A grading report does not list the ownership of the gem or item of jewellery
  • An appraisal evaluates the gemstone or item of jewellery and determines the insurance or market value thereof
  • An appraisal and grading report are often used jointly, where the appraisal determines the value described in the
    grading report
