The Anatomy of a Diamond

To buy wisely, it is important to understand what to look for. Part of this understanding is
overall appearance of a cut gem.  As Round Brilliant cut diamonds are the most often
purchased shape of a diamond, this would be a good example to use to explain important
features to examine when purchasing a diamond.
Facets:  The angles and shapes of the facets are calculated mathematically to

entrance and exit area for light.
Crown:   This is the part above the girdle that reaches from the widest part up to the
              table.
Pavilion: This is the part below the girdle that reaches from the widest part down to the
               culet.
Girdle:   This is the widest part of a diamond and is where the diameter of a diamond is
              measured.
Culet:    This is the bottom point of the pavilion.  This point is sometimes cut into a
Depth:   This is the measured distance from the table to the culet.  The depth of a
              diamond determines the cut ratios.

The eight
important
factors in the
cut of a
diamond are:

Facets
Table
Diameter
